OR Tambo Airport have five city bus lines operated by Metrobus and Putco.
Route 262 is the most convenient route to get to the city center. The buses depart from outside of Terminal A and stop at Gandhi Square in the center.
The service operates hourly from 7:35 AM to 5:50 PM. A typical trip takes around 30-45 minutes and a single ticket costs R 20.
Keep in mind that these services are not convenient as their schedules are not reliable and buses get overcrowded.
There are also private bus/shuttle companies that offer services from OR Tambo Airport to various parts of Johannesburg and nearby towns.
You can use one of these services:
Be sure to book from one of the authorized services from their kiosks inside the arrival hall. There are many unofficial minibus services in the airport. Authorized shuttle buses have ACSA logo on their vehicles.
Do not take any unauthorized shuttles as you will end up paying more and taking safety risks.
Gautrain, a rapid rail network, offers convenient and safe connections from Johannesburg International Airport. It is quite convenient to use this service especially if you are staying close to one of the stations along the route.
The line has just two stops, Marlboro Station and Sandton Station. You can transfer to other lines of Gautrain network from those stations.
Sandton Station is located in the business district of Johannesburg and is considered one of the safest places to stay.
You can use Sandton Station also as a transfer point to other lines of the network.
Johannesburg Park Station (main hub of Metrorail network) is just two stops away from Sandton Station. You can get most parts of the city using this Metrorail network.
The airport train station is located on the upper level of terminals and is just steps away from the arrival terminal.
The trains depart every 10-20 minutes between 5:10 AM- 9:04 PM. The journey to Sandton Station takes only 14 minutes. A single ticket costs R 151 (plus R16 for non-refundable Gautrain Card).
Consider using this service only if your final destination is close to one of the stations along the route. Johannesburg is, unfortunately, famous of being a dangerous place for tourists and even for locals.
The taxi queue is located outside of Terminal A.
If you are a first time visitor, taking taxi might be the most convenient and safest way to reach to your final destination without hassle.
A journey to Johannesburg city center or Melville (a safe area where many tourists stay) takes around 30-40 minutes and the cost will be around R 300-400.
If you don't want to deal with the hassle of taxi companies/drivers or long bus queues, you can prebook a ride via Kiwitaxi, an online booking platform that offers reliable and cheap airport transfers worldwide. The English-speaking driver will wait for you at the airport even if your flight is delayed, holding a sign with your name on it.
• The authorized taxis have yellow taxi signs on their roof and they should be used all the times for safety reasons.
All the authorized taxis are metered, insist your driver to use the meter before you take the taxi. Be prepared to get overwhelmed by drivers offering taxis and transfers; you should simply ignore them.
• Uber service is also available at OR Tambo Airport. Usually there are many Uber cars waiting at the airport. It is considered as a safe and hassle-free way of getting to Johannesburg as you can simply check driver's rating and book your ride from your mobile. The prices depend on demands at a specific time but you can consider a range of R 200-300 for city center.
