❯ Aerobús is the official shuttle bus service of BCN Airport, and is the most convenient way to get to Barcelona city center. The trip takes 30 minutes.
A one-way ticket cost €5.90, a return €10.20. You can get your tickets either on board or from the Aerobús website.
Buses depart every 5 minutes from 5:35 AM–1:05 AM, from both terminals 1 and 2, and make a loop between the airport and Placa Catalunya (central Barcelona). All stops along the route have metro connections.
❯ Another option is TMB bus 46 (which becomes bus N16/17 at night), which goes from the airport to Plaça Espanya (one of the city's most important square, situated just on the edge of the city center) in 25-30 minutes.
A one-way ticket costs €2.15 and can be purchased directly from the driver. The buses leave from terminals 1 and 2, every day from 5:30 AM–11:50 PM.
T10 travel cards aren't valid on Aerobús shuttle buses, but can be used on TMB buses. Do however keep in mind that, although TMB buses are cheaper than Aerobús, they're not very comfortable for travelers with a lot of luggage, as they don't have any space specifically for luggage.
You can get towards central Barcelona by taking either the RENFE commuter train, line R2, or the L9 Sud metro line, as both of these connect to several stations on the central Barcelona metro system:
❯ The R2 RENFE train line has seven stops and connects to metro lines L1–L5 along the way. The entire trip from BCN Airport to central Barcelona should take around 40-50 minutes, depending on your final destination.
Make sure to buy a regular metro ticket, which can also be used on the RENFE R2 train line, so that you can transfer directly to the metro without having to buy another ticket. A one-way ticket cost €2.15 (you can also get a T10 ticket with ten trips for €9.95).
The train leaves from terminal 2 every 30 minutes, from 5:40 AM–11:40 PM.
If your flight lands in terminal 1, get the free shuttle bus to terminal 2.
❯ The L9 Sud Barcelona metro line has been operating since 2016. The line has two airport stations, Aeroport T1, located below terminal 1, and Aeroport T2 in terminal 2.
This newer metro line is not part of the same metro system as most of the main stations and transportation hubs in central Barcelona (such as for example Placa Catalunya, Estacion Sants or Placa Espanya), and you will therefore need to take a connecting metro to transfer to one of the central metro lines.
Keep in mind that you cannot use normal metro tickets or a T10 travel card on metro line L9, but will need to buy a special 'Bitllet Aeroport' ticket, which costs €4.50 (one way).
Barcelona has a dense metro network, so be sure to print a metro map or download the Barcelona Metro TMB Map Routes app to your smartphone, to figure out where along the L9 you can connect to the metro line you need to reach your final destination. When connecting to the regular metro system from the L9 airport line, you'll also need to get a regular metro ticket, which costs an additional €2.15.
• Neither the R2 train or L9 Sud metro option will take you all the way to central Barcelona - you'll need to change to other metro lines along the way, and these transfers may also add to travel time. If you have a lot of luggage, a simpler and potentially much quicker option is to take the Aerobús shuttle bus from the airport, as it takes you directly to central Barcelona.
• If you're spending some time in Barcelona and plan to use the metro more than once, it's more economical to buy a ten-trip T10 travel card for €9.95. As mentioned above, you can use the T10 card on the R2 RENFE airport train, but not on the L9 airport metro line, as this requires a special 'Bitllet Aeroport' ticket.
BCN Airport is located about 18 km from Barcelona city center.
A taxi trip from the airport to central Barcelona takes about 20-40 minutes and should cost around €25-30.
Taxi ranks are located outside of level 0 of both terminals 1 and 2.
If you don't want to deal with the hassle of taxi companies or long bus queues, you can prebook a ride via Kiwitaxi, an online booking platform that offers reliable and cheap airport transfers worldwide. The English-speaking driver will wait for you at the airport even if your flight is delayed, holding a sign with your name on it.
Taxis charge extra for large luggage items (€1 per item) and for leaving the airport (€3.10). This should be clearly indicated inside the taxi.
